Publicly funded drug plans across Canada routinely cite cost as a reason to deny patients access to new drugs. Media frequently reports cases where publicly-insured patients cannot get innovative new treatments because governments refuse to pay. It’s true that provincial governments have a responsibility to taxpayers to manage public health spending wisely, but cost is a phony excuse for denying patients access to new medicines.
